As part of the broader focus of extending and enriching our students, Covenant offers some students the opportunity to be accelerated in their HSC studies.
One subject in which acceleration occurs is Mathematics.
Last year, four Year 11 students completed the HSC Maths Course: Rachelle O'Neill, Olivia Waller, Daniel Horton and Hunter Jourdan. By accelerating,
these students were able to be continually challenged rather than allowing their learning to idle. Acceleration also has a very practical purpose.
As Mrs Mekerdichian, our Maths Coordinator explained, "These students were identified in Stage 5 as being capable of doing Mathematics Extension 2
for their HSC. Hence, by accelerating in Mathematics from early on, it allowed them more time to focus on their Extension units which are very difficult
and time consuming".
Recently, Mr Chen caught up with three of these students to talk about their experiences:
1) What did you need to do for the HSC Maths Course?
Olivia: There was lots of Maths work to catch up on! Most of us started in Year 10 before the actual HSC content could begin.
Daniel: There were four periods each week: two periods with a teacher and two study periods in the library. This meant that classes were constantly full
Hunter: The study periods were fantastic as it allowed us to have a good balance because it meant you could still work with your friends but without the
structure of a class.
2) What were the advantages of doing the HSC Maths course in the accelerated mode?
Olivia: The main advantage was evident this year with not having such a big study load. I found it extremely helpful not needing to do Mathematics, particularly
when I have other Extension subjects that I should focus on (not to mention the four extra study periods that we have now!)
Hunter: It meant that during the holidays before the HSC, we were able to study for only one subject. Also, I didn't feel like we missed out on anything
in terms of social events either. It was a good balance.
3) What would you say to other students who might be thinking of doing an accelerated course?
Olivia: Stick with the course even if it seems like a lot of extra work. It will pay off!
Daniel: Make sure you know your ability. Put in the effort so that you don't end up redoing the course. Make sure that you ask your teachers if you don't
understand any of the work.
Hunter: Know how much time you are going to put into it.
All four students did very well in their final exams, achieving marks in excess of 90. We are very proud of them and their efforts!
