At Covenant Christian School, students are encouraged to develop their gifts in music in order to be able to serve their classmates and the Covenant community. They can do this through performance opportunities while exploring their creativity through composition. At an individual level, music is a medium of personal expression, and thus lends itself to the expression of faith, for both the individual and as a tool for outreach. Students are challenged to consider how they can use their gifts in music to further God’s kingdom.

Do I have to be able to play an instrument?
Yes, you do. You need to be receiving lessons on your instrument from a tutor.
Is voice an instrument?
Of course it is!
Do I need to bring my instrument every day?
No – you will only need to bring you instrument on practical days (usually only once or twice each week).
What if I play a large instrument?
If you play piano or drums, you can use the school equipment. You can also use the school’s amplifiers.
Where can I store my instrument during the day it is at school?
You can use the Music Staffroom or Music Storeroom. There is usually a staff member there at the end of the day for you to collect your instrument.
Do I need to be in a school ensemble if I do elective Music?
Yes, you do. We ask you to be in one of our ensembles while you are studying music. This can include the school musical.
Do I have to be able to read music?
You should have a basic ability to read music and understand that this will be required of you in the Music course.
Do we have to study composition?
Yes – this is a compulsory are of the curriculum.

Performance, Listening and Composition.
Do I need to do Music in Year 9 & 10 if I want to choose it for Year 11 & 12?
If you would like to do Music 2 or extension, you need to have completed Stage 5 Music. You can choose to do Music 1 if you have not completed Stage 5, however, you may struggle to understand the terminology and concepts at first.
