“Oh, silly Mummy!” is a phrase I haven’t used for about 5 years. I used to say it all the time when I made a mistake until I reflected on what I was teaching my son. I was teaching my son that making a mistake means I’m silly. But that’s not true! Did you know that our brains grow when we make mistakes? It seems a bit counterintuitive, but brain research shows that when we make mistakes lots of connections are made in our brains. This is worth reflecting on. It’s also worth reflecting on how you view making mistakes.
The research says that our attitude toward mistakes is very important. Do you see mistakes as a problem or as an opportunity for learning and improvement?
I make mistakes all the time. Really… so many mistakes. In fact, if you’re not making mistakes in maths you’re not mathing (that’s a technical term made up by me). I would actually suggest that mistakes are foundational to maths. When we make mistakes, we learn a lot. It highlights areas for growth and leads to curiosity and investigation and maths is all about investigation.
The problem lies when we make a mistake and stop there. Oh, I am cringing at the thought! If I stopped or gave up every time I made a mistake I would have missed out on so many learning opportunities.
Remember, you are a role model for your children. They are so often mimics of what they see from their parents. Have a think about how you respond when you make mistakes. Can I suggest a dialogue along the lines of:
I challenge you to try it. It’s not as easy as you might expect, but with practice it gets much easier. Imagine if this gives your children the freedom to make mistakes and explore and investigate. How much might they grow their brains?
See you next corner!

“What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” - Matthew 4:30-32
Mustard is the name of our Secondary lunchtime Christian group. The aim is to see all involved students 'growing together' in faith and to see the Gospel message grow in new hearts. Each Friday, a group of 20 Year 12 students meet with about 80 students from Years 7 to 10 to encourage them in fellowship and discipleship. These leaders prepare Bible teaching, small group time and games each week as they serve God and the students who attend. We recently welcomed the incoming team of leaders in a Secondary assembly and are looking forward to their service this term and in the coming year.
Mustard Captains: Zoe S and Sam P
Mustard Leaders: Keziah A, Holly B, Jessica G, Molly J, Savannah L, Alexander L, Keith L, Tyler M, Emma M, Katie O, Daniel P, Isabel P, Saskia P, Sammy R, Hannah S, Tristan V, David W, Nadia Y
Mustard is on every Friday lunch time in the Hall - everyone is welcome!

Congratulations to Oskar M on participating in the CSSA State Tennis Championships last week. He won all six of his pool matches and finished top of his pool! Oskar shares his experience below:
I was given the opportunity of representing Covie at the CSSA Open Tennis Tournament at Blacktown Tennis Centre. I was one of the few representatives who came alone to represent their school. The competition was divided into two rounds. Firstly the pool rounds, where players had to play everyone in their pool in a round robin format. Then, the top two or three players from each pool advanced to the finals round, which is an elimination format, like you see at the major tennis tournaments, like the Australian Open.
The pool round was fun yet challenging. My pool had two very strong players, and competing against them raised my level of play; I felt very lucky to come out as the winner of those matches. I ended up winning all six of my pool matches and finishing top of my pool which gave me a lot of confidence. However, in the knockout round of 16, things didn’t go as well. Despite all 6 of my games being close and decided by a sudden death deuce point, there were some line calls that my opposition called in his favour and those calls got in the way of my game. Now I will have to wait until the new year to see if I make CIS next year.
I would like to give a special thanks to Coach Lisa, whose support and coaching over the last two years have been fundamental to my development as a player. She improved my skills but at the same time gave me lots of confidence to take onto the court.
